Arizona 2011 Religious Freedom Day Proclamation
Jan. 7, 2011 -- This week, Arizona Governor Jan Brewer has issued a proclamation recognizing Sunday, January 16, 2011 as Religious Freedom Day. Her proclamation calls upon Arizonians to "observe this day with appropriate events."
Gateways State Coordinator for Arizona, Bernadette Gruber, requested the governor issue the proclamation.
"I was thrilled when the governor's office called me to let me know they had approved my request and were going to issue the proclamation," Bernadette said today. "This is an important step in promoting greater awareness of the religious freedom students and teachers have in our public schools across the state."
Thanks to Bernadette's work in Tucson, over 10,000 Free to Speak pamphlets will be distributed throughout the public schools and community; 30 churches are participating in Religious Freedom Day promotions; and 205 public school principals across the community will receive a six-page letter from the Alliance Defense Fund. The letter clarifies students' and teachers' religious liberties citing Supreme Court decisions.
